1,260,800 Chinese-made doses arrived in the Ninoy Aquino International Airport on Aug. 21, 2021 to help accelerate vaccinations in the country amidst the upsurge of new COVID variants.
The shipment included 1 million Sinovac shots purchased by the Philippine government and 260,800 Sinopharm vaccines donated by the Chinese government.
“This is a big help to our countrymen, and for the treatment of those ill, especially now that there is the Delta variant,” said Peace Process Assistant Secretary Wilben Mayor.
The latest batch of vaccine doses will be given to areas with a high prevalence of COVID-19 instances and attacks, according to Mayor.
Currently, around 14.9% of the Philippine population has been fully vaccinated; meanwhile, health officials are now increasing the country’s vaccination target from 70% to 80-90% of the population for the country to attain herd immunity.
Despite the revised objectives, the country’s vaccine czar, Carlito Galvez Jr. stated that the government still intends to vaccinate 70% of the population by 2021.
