These days, many students have no choice but to stay home because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and it seems to continue that way, as they live through day by day, discovering new hobbies and learning skills while quarantined. Some students even earn money to help their families or other people in need. One of these students, Alex Dela Cruz, shared their story. She makes artworks from her dreams, by putting intangible objects into pieces that are visible to the human eye.

Dela Cruz said in the interview that she has been fascinated by art ever since she was 4 years old. Though she has been captivated by it for several years, Dela Cruz said that she only took art seriously last 2015, with her love for art growing immensely since then.

Paintings by Dela Cruz frequently feature intriguing ideas and oftentimes cater to people’s imaginations. When examined closely, her works also contain political or emotional elements. In the present, however, she is into surreal art, saying that the dream-like beauty of surrealism makes her interested.

For her, the opportunity of art as a business had never presented itself until quarantine came around, mentioning that she has had more time and opportunities to work on her pieces and herself. Quarantine had sparked confidence within her, changing all her previous thoughts that her art was not good enough to sell. Dela Cruz wanted to take a shot on selling her artworks, and she did exactly that.

Dela Cruz currently posts her artworks on her Instagram account, “@adc.arts18”. Some time after making her account, swarms of people filled her inbox saying that they were interested in her paintings, while some even inquired about the prices of her artworks.

Inspiring many through her keen eye and imaginative artworks, Dela Cruz’s business continues to succeed. She has sold artworks online and has some artworks in galleries in the Philippines, notable ones being the Good Art Gallery and the upcoming, Nuzenart, located in Nasugbu, Batangas.

Building an art-related business is not an easy task especially during a pandemic. Alex Dela Cruz took the shot and has truly showcased her talents and skills, amplified by her perseverance and determination, in her artworks from home.
