On this day, Filipinos celebrate National Heroes' Day. First observed in 1931, the date was chosen in commemoration of the August 1896 Cry of Pugad Lawin which kicked off the Philippine Revolution of the same year. During the said moment, members of the Katipunan revolutionary group gathered and tore up their "cedulas" (tax certificates) to defy the Spanish rule in the country. Often, the holiday is celebrated parades, events, fireworks displays, and the like. Interestingly, National Heroes Day is not always celebrated on August 31; rather, it it celebrated on the last Monday on the month of August.
