Facebook (FB) has shut down over 100 fake accounts linked to the military for being involved in “coordinated inauthentic behavior”, head of Facebook’s security policy Nathaniel Gleicher announced.
Facebook reported that during this takedown, 57 FB accounts were deleted alongside 31 FB pages and 20 Instagram accounts because of “foreign or government interference”.
“They posted primarily in Filipino and English about local news and events, including domestic politics, the military’s activity against terrorism, the draft of the pending anti-terrorism bill, criticism of communism, youth activists and the opposition, criticism of the Communist Party of the Philippines and its military wing the New People’s Army, and the National Democratic Front of the Philippines,” Gleicher said.
Gleicher also mentioned that links between the Philippine military and the Philippine police were found; thus, Facebook attributed the fake social media accounts to these government organizations.
However, presidential spokesman Harry Roque made a statement claiming that these accounts are not affiliated with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) or the Philippine government in general.
“We have to believe the Armed Forces of the Philippines when they said that they have no official pages taken down by Facebook… So all these pages, obviously, are not pages of the Armed Forces of the Philippines or the government of the Philippines,” Roque said.
Gleicher assured the public that Facebook will be working closely with local officials in the Philippines to resolve this issue.
