President Rodrigo Duterte and Vice President Leni Robredo both released statements on Aug. 21 in honor of Ninoy Aquino’s 38th death anniversary.
“Ngayong araw, ginugunita natin ang ikatatlumpu’t walong anibersaryo ng pagkamatay ni Ninoy Aquino. May dagdag na kalungkutan ang paggunita natin ngayon, dala ng pagpanaw ng anak niyang si PNoy nitong nagdaang Hunyo lamang,” says Robredo.
(Today, we commemorate the 38th anniversary of the death of Ninoy Aquino. There is additional grief in our memory today, due to the passing of his son PNoy last June.)
In a separate statement, Duterte says, "May this sacrifice inspire all of us to be resilient and undaunted by challenges, especially now that we are still dealing with COVID-19.”
Ninoy Aquino was assassinated at the Manila International Airport, which is now named Ninoy Aquino National Airport following his death, upon returning from his exile.
His death sparked the 1986 EDSA revolution which led to his wife, Corazon “Cory” Aquino, becoming the succeeding president.
Republic Act No. 2956 declares Aug. 21 of each year as Ninoy Aquino Day, a non-working holiday.
