The Philippine National Police (PNP) released data urging female students to take caution as the resumption of face-to-face classes begin. The PNP released records covering the period of July 1 to August 31 which revealed that majority of the reported crimes involved rape. In the last two months, the PNP has recorded 149 crimes against female students across the country.

The PNP issued the data amid the rising tension on social media regarding the alarming rate at which women are getting abducted and becoming victims of rape-slay cases.

An alarming amount of the reported cases originated from Metro Manila.

Other commonly reported cases included acts of lavisciousness and violations of the Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act of 2004.

On Sept. 2, PNP Chief Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr. said in a statement; “Our intention is not to create panic, but we caution the students to always be vigilant around their environment,”.

"When their parents tell them not to trust strangers, the children must take this seriously,” Azurin added.

Following the release of this information, Azurin assured that the PNP, in strong coordination with the Department of Education, is working hand-in-hand to ensure the safety of the children. “Now that classes are returning to the in-person set-up, there is a greater challenge for the police officers to monitor closely the vicinity around learning institutions,” Azurin stated.
